月面着陸40周年、今明かされる知られざる美談
アポロ11号が月面に降りて40年
そんな記念日も過ぎましたが、１つ良いお話があります。
実は当時11歳の少年によって、アポロ11号が救われていたという実話です
当時、11歳のグレッグ君は、アポロ11号との交信に使っていた重要なアンテナを修理したという話だったのです。

アポロ11号って無事に帰ってきたのかと思ったら実はちょっとしたトラブルがあったようですね。そしてそれを救ったのは当時10歳のGreg君だったそうです。ちょっといいお話なのでさくっとご紹介。
At 50 years old I am proud of this country and my very small part played in Apollo 11. As a 10 year old boy I helped “save the day” at the Guam tracking station on Apollo 11’s return to earth. My dad, Charles Force, was the NASA Tracking Station Director on Guam at the time. A bearing in the stations largest antennae failed after the moon landing. With Guam being a crucial link in NASA communications with Apollo 11 as it returned it was not possible to not use the antennae. My dad’s solution was to get his 10 year old son out to the station (because my arm was small enought to fit through the only access hole) and pack grease around the failed bearing so the stations could finish its support role in the mission. The story was picked up by news outlets around the world.
当時11歳だったグレッグ君、今51歳ということでどんな生活をされているのでしょうか？
CNNの記事によれば、この出来がきっかけで、グレッグ君は物理学を専攻し、も宇宙飛行士を目指したようですが、残念ながら色盲というハンデがあり、プログラムをパスすることが出来なかったのですが、それでも努力した彼は現在パイロットのライセンスを取得、そして現在はスポーツジムのオーナーとして活躍されており、今でも月面に降り立つ夢は捨てられていないそうです。
